Gallbladder Diet After Surgery

Many people recovering from gallbladder surgery continue to experience the symptoms that bothered them in the first place: bloating, gas, nausea, headaches and dizziness. If this describes you, do not despair; proper diet can alleviate and even eliminate these symptoms. Gallbladder surgery may not correct the underlying problem. Following a carefully crafted diet can help prevent gallbladder attacks.

Diet-What to Avoid

    Certain foods are known to aggravate the digestive system and increase the frequency and severity of gallbladder attacks. Caffeine is a common culprit, so avoid coffee, soda and chocolate. Artificial sweeteners can worsen symptoms, as well as fried and fatty foods. Dairy will increase bloating and gas, as will certain vegetables, such as onions, legumes and broccoli.

Diet-What to Seek

    Beets and cucumbers will become your best friends, as they are among the best foods to alleviate the symptoms of gallbladder attacks. Other fruits and vegetables will help as well, especially avocados, tomatoes, lemons and grapes. You can also add vinegar or garlic to your meals, as these foods relax the liver and gallbladder.

Tips

    Instead of three large meals, eat several small meals each day. This will give your liver and gallbladder more time to handle smaller amounts of food. Also, make sure that you're drinking plenty of fluids. Six to eight cups of water each day will make your digestive tract's job much easier.
